  Background

  
  Sometimes, creatures as small as bats have a glorious tale to tell. Perhaps even stories of heroism, wondrous discoveries, fortunes won and lost, even true love!
  
  ... but don't hold your breath. This is not one of those stories.
  
  The floating city of Cul'corte rests in the sky along a desert region near the equator. It's a note of some legend, since it is difficult to see save at sunrise, and fades from view by mid-morning. It is nearly always shrouded in clouds, and the area around it often storms and pulses with the oddest weather imaginable, due to the magic that suspends the city.
  
  Cul'corte has a league of weather mages, who have the task of keeping the city afloat and the weather at bay. Noxi's mage was one of these individuals. Alas, as Cul'corte's rule passed from father to son, their task changed from keeping the storms at bay, to controlling the storms. Should the people uprise or disobey, they were to bring the storms into the city. Riot occurred, and storms reigned for some time, all the while the former leader remained ignorant to the problem, deep in a ceremonial sleep.
  
  Several of Cul'corte's weather mages eventually rebelled themselves, earning them a one-way trip into the ruler's rubbish bin: a portal to an unknown plane. Noxi's mage, was again, one of those individuals. However, before the mage was taken off to be 'dumped', she gave her bat a task: to rouse the former king from his enchanted rest, so that the tyranny would end.
  
  Once Noxi's mage was tossed into a portal, however, Noxi vanished from Cul'corte, rather glad to be free of her master. She feels no guilt about leaving, and does not care about the outcome of the strife.
